Talcum Powder Cancer Lawsuits Hitting Millions In Verdicts

The next in a series of trials over ovarian cancer allegedly brought about by talcum powder is set to begin shortly. The trials focus on pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson, claiming that the company marketed and distributed talc based products that put women at a higher risk of developing cancer of the ovary.

A spokesperson from www.talcumpowder.org says, "These lawsuits are not going anywhere soon. Johnson & Johnson has been ordered to pay millions in restitutions to women from the first three trials."

Opening statements for this newest trial are set to begin on the second week of April, before the same judge who presided over four Missouri trials based on the same criteria. Plaintiffs in the first three trials were awarded nearly $200 million in damages and these sparked a number of additional claims to be filed as women around the nation determined that the circumstances surrounding the lawsuits were the same as theirs.

"Women used these products, specifically Johnson's Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower for years," says the spokesperson for talcumpowder.org. "They continued to use them regularly and Johnson & Johnson continued to market and sell them, even after studies showed a direct link between talc and ovarian cancer."

Plaintiffs in the lawsuits allege that Johnson & Johnson, along with Imerys Talc of America, the company's mineral supplier, failed to warn consumers that there was a direct link between the long term use of talcum powder and the development of ovarian cancer. On the other hand, the companies both argue that the studies proving this link are outdated and that talc is not a carcinogenic.

Legal experts expect a flurry of legal activity as more and more talcum powder related lawsuits are filed over the next few months. Missouri seems to be the focus of most of the trials to date, although there are cases being filed in other cities across the country. Millions have been paid out so far and these numbers are expected to rise drastically as more and more women come forth with their claims. Talcumpowder.org offers updated information and resources for those who believe they have a claim.
