Xarelto Lawsuit Update: New Lawsuits Filed in Xarelto MDL

BloodThinnerHelp.com reports today on the increasing number of cases filed in the Xarelto multidistrict litigation.  Ever since the Xarelto MDL was established in December 2014 the number of cases filed has grown dramatically.  Six months after its establishment, in June 2015, there were approximately 500 lawsuits filed in the MDL.  Court documents show that only about six weeks later, on July 15, 2015, the number of lawsuits filed had risen to 805 lawsuits.  Currently there are about 1,200 lawsuits filed in the MDL and that number is expected to continually rise as litigation continues.  For more detailed information on the Xarelto litigation, visit this page.

Federal Xarelto Lawsuits Consolidated in New Orleans:

These lawsuits are consolidated into an MDL in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana located in New Orleans and presided over by Judge Eldon Fallon.  The lawsuits are able to be consolidated because they all make similar allegations against the same defendants, the manufacturers of Xarelto, Bayer AG and Janssen Pharmaceuticals.  They allege that Xarelto causes serious, uncontrollable internal bleeding that can lead to severe injuries and death, that the manufactures of Xarelto failed to adequately warn patients and doctors about the real dangers of the drug, and that the manufacturers of Xarelto were reckless in releasing a drug onto the market without a corresponding antidote to the drug’s anticoagulant effects.

Lawsuits Allege Xarelto’s Lack of Antidote is Dangerous:

The lawsuits allege that the manufactures released Xarelto onto the market with the knowledge that there was no corresponding antidote available for the drug.  This means that if a patient taking Xarelto suffers from an internal bleeding event, there is no way short of serious, lifesaving interventions, to stop the internal bleeding.  This uncontrollable internal bleeding has left many patients who were taking Xarelto with serious injuries and many have died due to resulting complications.  This situation is a very different one than patients who are taking a traditional blood thinner, such as Warfarin, are in.  If a patient who is taking Warfarin suffers from an internal bleed, doctors will simply be able to administer vitamin K and the patient's blood will clot again.
