La Trobe Financial’s Head of Major Clients, Daryl Hill conquers Mount Kilimanjaro

PRLog - Sep. 7, 2014 - MELBOURNE, Australia -- Always looking for a challenge, La Trobe Financial’s Head of Major Clients, Daryl Hill has recently climbed the 4th highest peak in the world, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world at 5,895 metres or 19,341 feet above sea level (Mount Everest is 8,848 metres or 29,209 feet).

There are seven official trekking routes by which to ascend and can be done in six or seven days. Daryl Hill, together with his son Bryce, attempted 6. Daryl made it all the way to the summit but with the onset of altitude sickness and apparently talking Swahili, decided to set-up camp and let Bryce and the rest of the team continue to the top. This alone is an enormous achievement in testing both physical strength and mental endurance. Daryl described the climb as a “hell of an adventure” but admits that it was not easy. The adventure started through dense rainforest, through an alpine desert and ending up at an arctic summit, experiencing freezing cold nights that left many unable to sleep.

In the early 1990s, Daryl had undertaken the Kokoda track, a single-file foot thoroughfare that runs 96 kilometres overland through the Owen Stanley Range in Papua New Guinea. When he compares this adventure with climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, he immediately confirms that the mountain climb had been a much tougher challenge. Some 25,000 people attempt each year to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, and only two-thirds are successful. Altitude related health problems are the most common reasons climbers turn back.

Daryl, who has worked at La Trobe Financial for over 30 years, commented that “from time to time, all of us should try to get out of our comfort zone. It is amazing what can be achieved if you push yourself a little. A different culture, meeting the locals and living in their environment is an amazing experience. It also helps put life into perspective, making you appreciate your life, family and working environment. We all face difficult stress levels and every day, we always are making difficult business decisions in our industry, but in my case I can take a step back and say, hey……I have dealt with Mount Kilimanjaro, I can deal with this!”

Greg O’Neill, La Trobe Financial’s President & CEO said …”our Head of Major Clients, Daryl Hill, is one of those special people. To have attempted such a challenge with his son says a lot about him as a person. His close relationship with his family and the importance of giving yourself the best opportunity is what life is all about. He breathes and lives the company’s core values of trust, exceptional service, accountability and motivation. Everyone that meets Daryl, knows that he is a person you can depend on. He is an exceptional team player and has recently won the company’s BDM of the Year (for a second time), an award voted by his peers. He has also been a recipient of our Distinguished Service Medal (DSM).”
