Trends in NFL Concussion Recording 2010-2012 Released

By: PRLog
The number of NFL regular season concussions was found to have increased by more than 18% over the period 2010–2012
PRLog - Aug. 25, 2014 - NEW YORK -- On August 26, 2014, the Concussion Blog will post the findings of a retrospective study of NFL regular season concussion trends for the period between 2010 and 2012.

The study compared independently collected and verified data with that reported by the NFL.

The study was conducted by Dustin Fink MS, ATC (Concussion Blog), Sean J. Morey (Head Coach Sprint Football, Princeton University), and Don Comrie (PanMedix, Inc.). The objective was to determine the validity and reliability of the number of concussions reported by the NFL and to offer analysis of trends in the data.

Highlights:

• The number of NFL regular season concussions was found to have increased by more than 18% over the period 2010–2012.

• The number of concussions credited to Starters increased from 55 to 104 (89%) during the period 2010-2012.

• The number of concussions attributed to Offensive players increased by 28 (35%) from 2010 to 2012.

• The Tight End is the position most likely to experience concussion (it is no longer the Quarterback).

• Three teams, Texans (2011), Bengals (2011), Bucs (2010), failed to record a concussion in one regular season from 2010-2012.

Although the collection of data is not verified by the NFL, we feel that this is the most accurate public record of concussions for the league available for analysis,” says Fink. “It is not the intention of this white paper to condemn or congratulate any party studied, rather a way to begin finding a ‘true number’ of concussions in the highest professional league.”

We are beginning to see greater vigilance from players, teams, and reporters this season. As of 8/25/2014, 60 preseason concussions have been revealed, compared with four concussions revealed in 2010 during the entire preseason.

In order to assess the value of rule changes, proper injury management, and equipment modifications, there needs to be independent and transparent analysis of all concussions. Until the actual ‘true’ number of concussions is exposed, we cannot know if any modifications within the game have produced results.

The Concussion Blog was founded in 2010 by Dustin Fink to bring awareness about concussions from an athletic trainer’s perspective. He began collecting NFL concussion data out of curiosity and almost instantly found inconsistencies in terms of recording/reporting. Mr. Fink continues to collect public information regarding NFL concussions, but he spends most of his effort blogging to raise awareness about current trends and information in the concussion realm. His 15 years of experience with on-the-field injuries, concussion included, plus his own bouts with concussion, bring a valuable perspective to concussions in sport. Mr. Fink’s blog has been cited by many people in their various efforts to bring general awareness of this issue.

Sean J. Morey, Head Coach Sprint Football, Princeton University, Co-founder and Past Co-chair of the NFLPA Mackey-White Committee, Former Member of the NFLPA Executive Committee.
