World’s first ‘e-nose’ could save you a trip to the ER

April 10, 2014. USA/EU. The world’s first ‘electronic nose’ is here — and its job is to sniff meat so you don’t get sick. The clever device can give detailed information about freshness and quality of poultry, beef and fish to be exact. After Mr. Augustas Alesiunas (now CEO of PERES) and his wife had a serious case of food poisoning, he set about finding a way to prevent it from happening again. “I decided to create a device that would help me and my family easily check the freshness and quality of our food.” That solution is the new PERES device.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that “more than 200 diseases are spread through food, and one out of three people living in industrialized countries may be affected by foodborne illness each year.” Food poisoning is of particular concern to the elderly, very young, and those pregnant or with compromised immune systems. So how does this little PERES gizmo ‘smell’ meat and decide if it’s good or should be tossed out?

More than 100 different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be detected in the near vicinity of decomposing beef, pork, poultry and fish, some of which can be used as indicators of freshness. The device has four types of sensors: temperature, humidity, ammonia and volatile organic compounds sensors. It can detect whether a product is fresh, if it is hazardous to health, and whether there’s a risk of food poisoning. The user simply points the device towards the food in question and click a button. The PERES uses Bluetooth technology to transmit data to the user’s smartphone or tablet. Detailed results are then displayed along with recommendations regarding the safety of the product. This e-sniffing PERES provides some reassurance on a day-to-day basis to those most at risk. It fits easily in your purse for trips to the market. Just point it/wave it over the meat before purchasing. You can also use it on meat at home to see if it’s still good or should be tossed. Widespread use could also help to eliminate tonnes of wasted food globally.

Now the PERES team is asking for your support to make food safer and help end world hunger. They are raising funds to get PERES to as many people as possible while supporting the international humanitarian charity Action Against Hunger’s mission to end global child hunger. Donate what you can via the new crowd sourced funding Get Peres Indiegogo campaign. There are great perks at all contribution levels. For about the price of a burger and fries ($10) you can make the food world a bit safer while fighting world hunger. Even a $2 donation benefits Action Against Hunger directly. Talk about a great combo. The bigger the donation — the bigger the perks. Even if you can’t donate, generate a buzz online through your networks. This patent pending device is ideal for individuals and professional chefs alike. It even comes in five different colours to suit your unique style.

Find out how it works at the Get PERES Indiegogo campaign. You never know, it may spare you or your family a nasty case of food poisoning and a trip to the ER one day.
