US SMALL/MIDCAPS-Stocks flat; mid-cap index stays near record

NEW YORK, Jan 13 (Reuters) - The S&P mid-capitalization index was trading just below its all-time intraday record on Thursday, helped by gains in financial shares, although it was nearly flat on the day.
